About

My Story

As one of the few Afrolatine women to graduate from St. Mary’s University with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering and Applied Physics and the second to graduate with a Ph.D in Physics from Syracuse University, I understand traversing spaces as the only. I personally recognize the importance of equity, justice, and inclusion in #STEAM  spaces and actively work to create transformational shifts in #STEAM culture so that those of us who are marginalized can thrive.

"Jessica gave the best keynote address we've ever had at the event!

Her ability to weave together her personal experiences in STEM and technical information about her scientific research was truly remarkable. It was engaging and inspiring and received high praise from attendees…I would highly recommend her to anyone looking for an inspiring keynote speaker! “

Syracuse University

2018

Dr. Jessica Esquivel is the second Black woman to graduate with a Ph.D in Physics from Syracuse University and one of only 150 Black women with Physics Ph. Ds in the country. Her research focused on innovative machine-learning techniques in particle physics, leveraging AI to peer into the quantum realm. Her doctoral thesis, Muon/Pion Separation using Convolutional Neural Networks for the MicroBooNE Charged-Current Inclusive Cross-Section Measurement, was a pioneering step towards applying AI to Argon detector technology.

ST Marys University

2011

Always blazing a trail, Dr. Esquivel did something unheard of: completing a dual degree in Electrical Engineering and Applied Physics in four years. A feat like this should’ve taken at least six years to complete, but Dr. Esquivel broke barriers by doing it in four. Simultaneously, Dr. Esquivel moonlighted as a research fellow in the Optical Radiation Branch at Brooks Air Force Base, San Antonio, TX, and transitioned to Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, TX under the auspices of Northrup Grumman.

Dr. Jessica Esquivel, Author

For Dr. Esquivel’ debut novel, Our Queer Universe: Deconstructing Definitions, Producing Particle Beams, and Examining Entangled Identities, she will be describing the physics and engineering of a particle beam and using it as a metaphor for her journey through academia as a Black, Mexican, neurodivergent queer woman who also happens to love the ethereal elegance of physics.

Queering Grief: Part 2

Hey Ya'll! TW: Death and dyingSo it’s been a minute. And to be honest, I had an entirely different post written for this about communal trauma, communal healing, and how different cultures deal with grief. And well just more heady, analytic stuff about grief. Em and I...
