Queering the Definition of Scientist
Dr. Esquivel’s journey isn’t just about groundbreaking research. As one of only around 150 Black women with a PhD in physics in the United States, she understands the challenges of navigating spaces where she’s “the first” or “the only.” She’s a champion for diversity in STEAM, particularly at the intersection of race, gender, and sexuality.
Dr. Esquivel’s impact goes beyond the lab. Recognized for her exceptional contributions to many community engagement programs and organizations, she is a vocal advocate for increasing diversity in physics and STEAM more broadly. Dr. Esquivel is redefining what it means to be scientist by disrupting the status quo, embracing all facets of her identity, and unapologetically existing in STEAM spaces.

From Wonder to Empowerment: Shaping Inclusive STEAM Spaces
My Story
Jessica grew up naturally curious about the world around her, constantly asking “why” and “how” to everything she encountered. That sense of wonder led her to pursue a career in physics, a field that would push her to uncover the universe’s most complex mysteries. As a queer Afrolatine woman, Dr. Esquivel’s experiences navigating predominantly white, male-dominated spaces have fueled her passion for creating more inclusive environments, particularly in STEAM fields. Dr. Esquivel co-founded Oyanova Enterprises to foster opportunities for Black and Brown communities through culturally relevant STEAM programming, mental health advocacy, and financial literacy initiatives. Through these efforts, she strives to break down barriers and ensure historically excluded communities have the support they need to thrive.
